Is Your iPhone Holding Up Ok?

Defective iPhone

After several weeks of daily use, I’ve come to realize that my iPhone is far from perfect. Compared to the Nokias and Sony Ericssons I’ve used in the past, the fit and finish of my iPhone 3G is substandard.

I mostly notice the slightly widening gap on the upper right hand side and the minor light leakage on the left seam between the bezel and the screen. I’m guessing the pressure to speed up production for the launch was the root factor.

Perhaps with the iPhone 4G, Apple will use some of those new Macbook manufacturing techniques?

Have you had any issues in terms of your iPhone’s build quality?

  1. I think it totally depends on where you keep it when you’re not using it. I’m notoriously hard on my cell phones, but my habit of keeping it in my back pocket when I’m walking and taking it out of my pocket when I’m sitting down keeps it shiny and new. Putting it in your front pocket is going to put an impressive amount of torque on it, for which I wouldn’t hold Apple responsible.

As for chipping, dropping it from a moving bicycle because it’s the size and texture of a piece of soap is the only time I’ve dented it, and otherwise it held up beautifully. Just a couple of nicks on the back (blah).

  2. Not sure what you do with your iPhone, but mine has only a couple of small nicks from dropping it on the floor and minor abrasions on the back case. I keep it in my front pocket (alone!) exclusively, so that’s maybe it?

  3. @Paul K

I’ve never dropped it and always kept it in a separate front pocket away from my keys and change.

In the whole scope of things, these issues are minor but I am looking forward to an iPhone that’s more like the current iPod Touch.

  4. I have the first gen.

Always kept it in my pockets, front, back, jacket, shirt. And I don’t have a case.

Apart from a couple of scratches to the glass, it’s like it was the day I bought it when they first were released in the US. I think the plastic back in the second gen contributes to it being less sturdy than the first gen. Just my $0.02.

  5. I have a first gen since shortly after they reduced the price.
It is nowhere as damaged as you are showing, I see some scratchs on the finish in the back but that’s it. It still looks great. I do use a case (a slip on fake leather.
