Japan Loves the Capybara

The Capybara (カピバラ) has received a lot of media attention in Japan. I’ve seen this animal on at least two different variety shows this past week. Walk into most any Japanese bookstore and you’ll see Capybara children’s books and stuffed animals.

My first reaction when I saw the Capybara, was “wow, that’s a really big rat.” This thing won’t have any trouble beating up on a Chihuahua or your average house cat.

I have no idea how long Japan’s infatuation with the Capybara will last. But I don’t think Japan’s dog and cats have anything to worry about. If you want one, they cost around 500,000 yen ($4,800) in Japan.
