Download Media Files with Unison

Unison About Screen

Usenet have been around for a long time but not a lot of people know about it. Originally designed as a message board, it has expanded into a huge holding bin for files of all kinds. If media files especially interest you (videos, music, pictures), you need to check out Usenet.

Unison is a great Usenet application by well know Mac developer Panic. It has a clear and simple interface and the act of tagging and downloading files is a straightforward process. Unison is shareware and costs $24.95.

You’ll also need access to a Usenet server. Most servers will cost $10 - $20 per month. Bandwidth is what determines cost. The more you download, the more you pay.

One Usenet provider I can recommend is EasyNews. I’ve been a customer of EasyNews for a long time and I find their Usenet service to be fast and reliable. For those concerned with privacy, you can easily establish an SSL connection with EasyNews. Unison has built-in support for SSL. You just need input a few settings into your Unison preferences.

Usenet offers a huge and varied collection of digital files. So there’s a good chance you’ll find something that interests you. Give it a try. You might just prefer this over BitTorrent.
