Make Your Mac Less Annoying with StartupSound.prefPane

Starting up your Mac notebook in a quiet location like a library or lecture hall can be something that annoys others in your immediate vicinity. Imagine trying to get some reading done when suddenly, you’re greeted by a loud “Goooong!”

Even with the recent release of Leopard, Apple has yet to include an easy way for its users to mute the startup sound. You can quickly fix this issue by downloading a simple free utility by the name of StartupSound.prefPane.

The latest version will work under Leopard or Tiger. As the name describes, this utility adds a system preferences pane that allows the user to adjust and even mute the startup sound volume. All this is done without changing the output volume level. As with any system level utility, make sure you read all of the directions before proceeding with the installation.

Perhaps the Apple engineers will finally incorporate this feature into a future patch. Until then, at least we have an easy to implement solution.
