Mac OS X 10.5.1 Update Fixes Firewall Issue

The Leopard 10.5.1 update came out today and it fixes a very important issue with the firewall. Previously, the Leopard firewall didn’t work well with certain third party apps. The end result was a third party app that refused to function properly. I wrote about this in an earlier post.
Apple’s notes regarding the update to its firewall:
- Addresses a code signing issue; third-party applications can now run when included in the Application Firewall or when whitelisted in Parental Controls.
- In Security preferences’ Firewall tab, the “Block All” option is now called “Allow Only essential services”
- Includes recent Apple security updates.
Skype and World of Worldcraft are two apps that gave me problems with the Leopard firewall. I’m now happy to say that both apps suffer none of the ill effects from Leopard’s earlier firewall. So run the software update and let me know if you’ve run into any issues.
