Having Fun with the iPhone 1.1.1 Update

iPhone

Updating my iPhone to 1.1.1 was not an enjoyable experience. After downloading the 150+ mb file, the update decided to freeze during the extraction process. Reinstalling iTunes or resetting the iPhone did nothing. I kept getting an unknown error message -3204.

Finally, I decided to create another user account and attempt to restore the phone through iTunes. That did the trick. I had to re-enter all of my info and reactivate the phone but I finally got the update installed. I hope future updates don’t go this bad.

So if all fails, try setting up another user account under OS X and see if that works for you. It’s much easier than having to uninstall/reinstall iTunes by deleting a bunch of weird files.

  1. Hmmm, always an adventure it seems. That sounds like a mega hassle, sorry to hear that. With over a hundred contacts I have poked away into my apple (but why)phone I think starting all over again would anger me enough to punch myself in the face.

  2. I should clarify that statement I made about re-entering my info. Most of the stuff (contacts, bookmarks, photos, music) was simply re-entered by syncing the phone back up with my main account. I still had to manually enter in my email account and preferences though.
