Why the PC?

Alienware Desktop

This is the second part to my earlier post. With the Mac now able to run Windows applications natively, we’ll focus on the hardware.

While the Mac affords the user a smooth user experience due to its closed architecture, there are obvious benefits to the PC platform. If you’re interested in a fully customized platform, where you can pick and choose every major component for your machine, then the Mac isn’t for you.

I miss the days, when I would buy a nice Asus motherboard, pick out the CPU, video card, sound card, and finish it off with a nice full tower case. Sure, you can swap out certain components on the Mac, but it’s nothing like the PC.

PCs are usually cheaper when compared to Macs. There are exceptions, but on average, you get more for your money on the PC side.

I remember buying a Core 2 Duo Asus Notebook with a Radeon x1600 video chip. It was hundreds less than a comparably configured Macbook Pro. The Asus had the grace and sleekness of a smelly ox, but when it came it performance, it screamed.

Will the battle between PC and Mac users ever end? Just utter a backhanded comment on most any message board regarding either platform and you’ll soon start a war. I say just use the best platform for the job. If you have a preference for Mac apps, then get a Mac. if you’re primarily interested in playing the latest and greatest games and you also enjoy tweaking the hardware, get a PC.
