Why the Mac?

That’s what people ask me sometimes. I have no hatred for the PC platform, but for general use, I find myself going to the Mac.
The biggest reason for me has to be with how Apple is able to integrate hardware and software design. Apple designs the operating system and they also design the hardware. This gives the user a unified computer experience. Users can spend less time hunting around for drivers or checking out the support sections of various vendors.
Windows can be just as stable as a Mac. But with the myriad of PC hardware configurations available, it is a challenge. This makes it harder for Microsoft to write to a target platform. Multiple motherboards, chipsets, video cards, sound cards, the list goes on.
Apple, on the other hand has a much more narrow hardware base to support. Installing the latest Mac OS/X is a breeze. You boot the OS X DVD, follow, the onscreen directions, and you’re done. A Windows install involves installing the OS, installing the chipset drivers, video drivers, wifi drivers, bluetooth drivers, sound drivers…you get the idea.
I’m not saying the Mac is an end-all solution. I’ve enjoyed using my Windows XP machine and know friends who are also happy with Windows. Besides, there are things on the Windows side that I miss on my Mac. I’ll talk about these issues in a future post. But for now, the Mac allows me to get work done without the occasional headaches that tend to crop up on Windows.
